Natriumfluoride werd door de nazi’s toegevoegd aan het drinkwater in concentratiekampen om de mensen rustig en gehoorzaam te maken. Natriumfluoride is een belangrijke bron van fluoride-ionen en werd vroeger dan ook gebruikt om fluoride aan leidingwater toe te voegen. Vandaag de dag wordt natriumfluoride met name toegepast in tandpasta.
