There have been brain scans on fibromyalgia patients that have shown atrophy in specific areas on the brain. Does this suggest premature aging of the brain? We have to remember that these are not long term studies. They cannot determine for example if these areas were smaller to begin with which mean they would be more of a risk factor than an indication those areas are shrinking in size. Secondly they do not know the cause of the atrophy in the area. It is seen in other conditions just different locations of the brain. Stress and pain seem to be common factors but what neurotransmitters or mechanisms are causing the atrophy to occurs? Thirdly they do not know the rate of change over time. They have not taken individuals and looked at their brain changing over time and looked at how they are functioning. However, what it does tell us is what areas are being affected by FM and where the symptoms of FM are coming from and this is quite important for future research. They are looking to the brain. Studying it and seeing the differences and what effects that has. Researchers are looking at the where.
The game plan
The study published in The Journal of Neuroscience, 11 April 2007, 27(15) set out to use a voxel-based morphometric analysis of magnetic resonance brain images it see if there is brain atrophy in the brain of people with fibromyalgia. There was reason to believe so based on previous studies. Changes in the structure of the brain like this have been seen in other pain conditions. Since there are similarities with those conditions the researchers believed there might be similar atrophying as well. In particular they endeavored to find out whether FM subjects have atrophy in brain grey matter, in areas that would be involved with stress, pain modulation and pain perception.
The study: Accelerated Brain Gray Matter Loss in Fibromyalgia Patients: Premature Aging of the Brain?
The study included ten patients with fibromyalgia and ten healthy subjects of a similar age. It excluded smokers, use of recreational drugs, alcohol consumption over three times a week, pregnancy, and any major medical, neurological and psychiatric conditions such as depression. The FM subjects were not taking anticonvulsants or antidepressant treatment for their condition.
Results
There was no difference in volume of white matter or CSF in the brains of FM subjects and the healthy controls. The study results indicated that fibromyalgia subjects had significantly less grey matter volume and in fact demonstrated 3.3 times greater age-associated reduction in grey matter. Every year of fibromalygia being equal to 9.5 times the loss in the normal aging process. The specific areas FM subjects showed less grey matter density where the cingulate, insular and medial frontal cortices, and parahippocampal gyri. According to the study the “The neuroanatomical changes that we see in fibromyalgia patients contribute additional evidence of CNS involvement in fibromyalgia. In particular, fibromyalgia appears to be associated with an acceleration of age-related changes in the very substance of the brain.” The Journal of Neuroscience, 11 April 2007, 27(15
Clearly this study shows fibromyalgia patients have grey matter atrophy that is more than three times the age matched controls. If this were the only study we might be inclined to say it was too small to be demonstrative but it is not alone in its conclusions.
In conclusion
It is a structural change that seems to be a response to how the brain is responding to chronic pain and stress. There are a many conditions (lower back pain, chronic fatigue syndrome) showing similar results but affecting different areas of the brain. What areas atrophy might help determine what the different symptoms we see in these conditions and it might even lead researchers to the mechanism behind the atrophy. Researchers in this study suggest a possible explanation might be “excitotoxicity and/or exposure to inflammation-related agents, such as cytokines.”
They also state it is interesting to note the grey matter loss occurs in areas “related to stress [parahippocampal gyrus and pain processing [cingulate, insular, and prefrontal cortices, which might reflect their long-term experience of these symptoms. Because cingulate and prefrontal cortices are particularly implicated in pain modulation (i.e., inhibition and facilitation of pain), structural changes in these systems could contribute to the maintenance of pain and symptom chronification in fibromyalgia. Furthermore, gray matter atrophy in areas such as parahippocampal and frontal cortices also appears consistent with cognitive deficits characteristic of fibromyalgia.” The Journal of Neuroscience, 11 April 2007, 27(15

This was a wake up for me. I was traveling abroad last year and noticed the salt was fluoridated on every label I read. I wondered why but soon realized the mountainous countries I visited couldn’t possibly control the fresh water flow into its many cities. So sure enough, here’s a way to get your dumbing-down fluoride if you can’t dump it into a central water works.
Fluoridate the salt. Of course. Just like they did at German concentration camps.
It’s reinforced so strictly in some countries that it’s illegal to produce salt WITHOUT fluoride.
Go figure. Where the hell could such a centralized mandate come from? The implication is that fluoride is an absolutely ESSENTIAL additive.
Damn them. What bullshit.
These elitists are everywhere instigating this perversion of natural life. All with corporate and local industrial American influenced backing I might add. All sell outs against the good of the many.

I remember wondering why I’d see wealthy people drinking Perrier water many, many years ago. What was the big deal? Water is water.
Ignorant pawn I was. As are so many.
The elites have known all along, had their own water and food supplies, and now even have anti-radiation drugs only the elites can get.
Just for starters.
We’re supposed to grovel at the feet of the great suppliers and roam supermarkets for their approved adulterated foods. Even organic is a scam and hard pressed to be validated. A very sad state of affairs.

A History of Fluoride

In 1945 local water treatment facilities began to add sodium fluoride to our water supply.
The first thing you should know is that the sodium fluoride they put in our water is not a pharmaceutical grade additive.
Sodium Fluoride is an industrial waste byproduct from aluminum manufacturing.
As aluminum production increased in the first half of the twentieth century, it became necessary to find somewhere to put the fluoride.  Manufacturers could no longer get away with dumping it into rivers or landfills, because it was poisoning crops and making livestock sick. Francis Frary, chief scientist for ALCOA,  had an idea.  He commissioned Gerald Cox at the Mellon Institute, to conduct research regarding the benefits of adding fluoride to the water supply.  The Mellon Institute was frequently hired by big business to produce research that supported their industries, and for several decades they produced research showing that asbestos was safe and did not cause cancer.  Hmmm.
They also produced reports assuring everyone that fluoride was not toxic and would be beneficial to add to our drinking water for healthy teeth.
Another proponent of the safety of fluoride at that time was scientist Harold Hodge, who was later revealed to to have been part of the the Human Radiation Experiment; injecting test subjects with plutonium and uranium in 1945-46.  This was documented by pulitzer prize winning reporter Eileen Welsonne in The Plutonium Files.
Hodge was also chief toxicologist of The Manhattan Project and fluoride was a key component in the production of the atom bomb.  His studies were conducted with a bias toward proving fluoride safe, which would protect the government and industry from lawsuits. More

Despite mainstream medical establishments and media outlets portraying multivitamin supplements as worthless and oftentimes toxic, vitamins have led to 0 deaths over the past 27 years. In contrast, pharmaceutical drugs were responsible for 3 million deaths, topping the death toll from traffic-related incidents. In 2009, pharmaceuticals were responsible for the death of 37,485 people nationwide.

The statistics come from the Annual Report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers' National Poison Data System (NPDS), and the findings go against the claims of most mainstream doctors and medical officials, who claim that pharmaceutical drugs are the only 'science-backed' method to 'treating' illness. However, the report highlights the fact that pharmaceuticals oftentimes lead to death and countless other side effects. In fact, the number of hospitalizations and side effects were not documented by the report. While the report only detailed the 3 million deaths as a result of drug use, countless other adverse health effects have been linked to popular pharmaceuticals such as cold and allergy medications.
Shockingly, the average drug label contains around 70 negative side effects, though many popular brand name drugs have been found to contain 100 to 125. Some drugs even list around 525 negative effects on the label. These drugs are being prescribed by doctors to 'treat' patients, when the drug side effects are routinely worse than the very illness they claim to treat.
These side effects are one reason that the FDA is now pulling over 500 cold and allergy drugs off of pharmacy store shelves. What the FDA is not addressing, however, are the negative effects associated with the top-selling therapeutic class pharmaceutical drug -- antipsychotics. Drugs, which are prescribed to 'treat' suicidal thoughts and behavior, have been found to actually lead to suicide and other diseases such as diabetes. The side effects were so significant that even U.S. pediatric health advisers have begun speaking out to the media, citing the link between antipsychotics and diabetes.


Previous whistleblowers exposed the link between mental health drugs and suicide after it was covered up by the makers of the drugs. Eli Lilly & Co, the makers of Prozac, ignored and hid studies as far back as the 1980s that found Prozac led to suicidal thoughts. Until Harvard Physicist Martin Teicher leaked the findings to the press, the company managed to hide the news from consumers worldwide.
Teicher said that the American people were being "treated like guinea pigs in a massive pharmaceutical experiment."
Pharmaceutical drugs are loaded with toxic side effects and do not eliminate the root cause of disease they claim to treat. Killing 3 million within the last 27 years, and topping traffic fatalities each year, pharmaceutical drugs are a deadly and ineffective option when it comes to combating disease.

Severe Reactions to Levaquin, Cipro and Other Fluoroquinolone Antibiotics: Are Doctors in Denial?

Recently I spoke to William, a 45 year-old, previously healthy attorney who in 2006 was prescribed Cipro (ciprofloxacin) for a urinary tract infection. After the first dose, William developed extreme nausea, dizziness and severe muscle pain. The Cipro was discontinued and the urinary infection was treated successfully with another antibiotic.
In December 2010, he developed a strep throat. The doctor prescribed Levaquin. William reminded the doctor of his reaction to Cipro, which is chemically similar to Levaquin. The doctor reassured William, telling him that although many of the doctor's patients had trouble with Cipro, none had problems with Levaquin. When William inquired about possible side effects, the doctor only mentioned dizziness.
Minor side effects began to appear after the fifth day on Levaquin. On the eighth day, William experienced pain so severe in many joints that he could barely walk and required a cane. Severe dizziness, chills, tingling sensations and muscle tremors also occurred. While all of this was developing, William called the doctor, who recommended he continue taking the Levaquin.
Now, severe pain continues whether standing, sitting or lying down. William is unable to perform routine daily activities or take care of children. He is barely able to care for himself. The first night of the severe reaction, William called 911 and was taken to an emergency room. There he was diagnosed with a reaction to Levaquin and given prednisone and Benadryl (an antihistamine) to take at home. Of course, prednisone is contraindicated with tendon and joint pain from Levaquin.
He returned to his doctor, who denied Levaquin could have caused the reaction. After all, none of her other Levaquin patients experienced serious side effects. Probably the strep, the doctor decided, and referred William for a full rheumatologic evaluation. This was negative.
William brought materials from the Levaquin package insert and the Internet to the doctor, who refused to look at them. In severe pain a few days later, William called the doctor, who never returned the call. William called to schedule another appointment but was told the doctor would not see him again. Through these weeks, the doctor consistently denied that Levaquin could have caused William's symptoms.
When people refuse to see the obvious, it is called "denial." Denial is a powerful, unconscious psychological mechanism which people employ when they cannot cope emotionally with reality. William's doctor was never able to even consider the possibility that Levaquin caused William's reaction. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case.
In my book Over Dose: The Case Against The Drug Companies, I wrote: "I have received more than sixty reports from patients with severe reactions to fluoroquinolone antibiotics such as Levaquin, Cipro, and Floxin."1 That was in 2001. The number has probably quadrupled since then. I wrote about Gail, age 51, who told me, "One of the hardest things to comprehend through all of this is the ignorance of most doctors concerning these side effects."
Previously healthy and athletic, Gail developed an infection after abdominal surgery. She was given Levaquin, and within two days she began experiencing electrical sensations and numbness in her legs. Despite these symptoms, which are well described as side effects of Levaquin in its package insert, the woman was told to finish the 21-day prescription. By that time, Gail had tendinitis in her shoulder and knee, a partially torn Achilles tendon, and impaired concentration and memory. She needed crutches for three months, and after a year the tendon and memory problems persisted.
Although adverse reactions involving nerves, joints, and tendons were well documented with Levaquin, Cipro, and other fluoroquinolone antibiotics, Gail's physicians still dismissed the possibility of a drug reaction. Ten years later, despite the presence of large black-box warnings in product information for Levaquin and Cipro, William's doctor displayed the same ignorance. Even worse, his doctor turned to that age all favorite, "Blame the Patient."
"One of the most frustrating and disappointing aspects about this whole experience is that the people who are supposed to be helping me, don't want to believe me," William told me. "As soon as I say, `I read the package insert....,' they assume that I am imagining the side effects because I read about them in the literature that came with the prescription. Or worse, if I say, `I looked this up online...,' I instantly lose all credibility."
These problems are not limited to fluoroquinolone reactions, but extend to all types of medications. It has been shown that doctors rarely bother to warn patients about common side effects of medications.2 And they frequently fail to recognize obvious medication reactions. For example, in a study in which patients with obvious adverse reactions from statin drugs were sent to doctors for evaluations, more than 75 percent of the doctors failed to identify the side effects as related to the statins. Instead, they blamed the symptoms on patients' age or over concern, or simply ignored the question and changed the subject.3
Recently, I met with Chris, a 37 year-old man who had developed signs of a peripheral neuropathy including burning and shooting pains in his hands and feet after receiving Levaquin. A runner for many years, he can no longer run because of pain and is in constant discomfort.
Seeking answers, Chris had questions for his doctors. Their reactions surprised him. "I merely asked if my symptoms might be related to the antibiotic. I wasn't seeking to blame anyone. They immediately threw up a wall. I could see their demeanors change. Each doctor rejected outright the possibility that Levaquin could have caused the problem. It was clear they didn't want to talk about it or look at an evidence, even the package insert."
I didn't sense any anger or blame in Chris. He never came across to me as someone full of rage, seeking to pin a lawsuit on a doctor. He was only seeking input and guidance. He didn't get either.
Why is this happening? Perhaps because doctors, like all people, have problems accepting blame. Many doctors over-identify with their medications. After all, the most common action that doctors take is to write a prescription. Doctors write more than 3 billion prescriptions annually, more than 8 million prescriptions every day of the year. However, the personal attachment of some doctors to their medications goes beyond reasonable and becomes pernicious when they become defensive and dismissive about obvious, common side effects.
It is well known that doctors are inadequately trained about medication side effects and how to handle them. Doctors are not adequately taught how to deal with their own emotions when a patient is disabled, hospitalized or dies because of a drug a doctor has prescribed. And of course, there is the constant fear of a lawsuit. Yet, when doctors refuse to look at information brought by patients from package inserts, which are written by the drug manufacturers and approved by the FDA, or articles from respected medical journals, something is very wrong. In this era of "evidence-based medicine," it is absurd when doctors bury their heads in the sand, refusing to even glance at evidence from the drug manufacturers and the FDA, the best source of evidence on medication reactions.
All the more reason for you to ask your doctor about possible side effects when she prescribes a new drug. And for you to go online, do your own research, and find out about the risks before filling the prescription.
Recently I spoke to another Cipro victim. He developed neuropathies and some joint and tendon pain but could still function almost normally. He saw several doctors, all of whom denied that Cipro could cause his symptoms. Except for one doctor who pulled out his blackberry, found the Cipro package insert and said, "Yes, it does warn of neuropathies with this drug. You are right." Let's hope there are more doctors like this one.

(Reuters) - The Food and Drug Administration warned on Tuesday that the antibiotic azithromycin, sold as Zithromax, can cause a potentially fatal irregular heart rhythm in some patients.
A study in the New England Journal of Medicine last May compared the risk of cardiovascular death from different antibacterial drugs and found that the drug, which is made by Pfizer Inc and is also sold by generic drugmakers, had a higher rate of death.
In its warning, the FDA said the drug can cause abnormal changes in the electrical activity of the heart that may lead to a potentially fatal heart rhythm known as prolonged QT interval, in which the timing of the heart's contractions becomes irregular.
The FDA said doctors should use caution when giving the popular antibiotic to patients known to have this condition or who have certain risk factors. Those who may be at risk include people with low levels of potassium or magnesium, a slower than normal heart rate, or people who take certain drugs used to treat abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias. The drug could also cause problems in people with torsades de pointes, a specific, rare heart rhythm abnormality.
However, the FDA noted that other drugs in the same class as azithromycin known as macrolides also have the potential for causing QT prolongation, as do non-macrolide antibiotics, such as fluoroquinolones, and doctors need to consider all of these risks when choosing an antibiotic.
Pfizer officials were not immediately available for comment.
Shares of Pfizer were down 0.5 percent at $28.10 on Tuesday morning on the New York Stock Exchange.
