My life changed overnight, and I've spent years living with the consequences of answers I should have received long before everything fell apart.
For 12 months, I lived with an undiagnosed C. difficile infection. I kept seeking help, trusting doctors, undergoing tests, and believing someone would eventually figure out what was happening to me. Instead of getting the answers and proper diagnostic care I desperately needed, I was prescribed fluoroquinolone antibiotics and developed toxicity that would change the course of my life forever.
I walked into those appointments looking for someone to help me get my life back. I never imagined I would walk away with illnesses and disabilities that would follow me for the rest of it.
I lost my health, my career, my independence, and parts of myself I may never get back. I went from living my life to fighting to remain a part of it.
And what hurts the most is knowing how differently things might have turned out if someone had simply admitted they didn't know.
I wasn't asking you to know everything. I was asking you not to destroy what you didn't understand.
I don't know how I'm still here after everything my body has endured. But I thank God every single day that I am.
Because when I came to you sick, I deserved compassion, honesty, and the willingness to keep looking for answers.
You could have simply said, "I'm sorry. I don't know."
And I would have respected you far more for those five words than for the years of suffering that followed. 💔
